I have often wondered how long would it take to dissolve the bacteria pellets as compared to the dry powder bacteria packaged in water soluble bags so I gave it a try. I filled a glass pie plate with clean non-chlorinated water and added two bacteria pellets.
Knowing that a pie plate is not quite like the bottom of a pond I proceeded with optimism. Starting date 10/14/25 last image 10/23/25
About a week later the pellets show signs of breaking down. I have no idea what enzyme or binder produces the red color. When you toss a water-soluble packet of bacteria into the water the packet being made of a starch like material dissolves quickly and disperses the dry bacteria over a wider area as it settles through the water column. This may provide more coverage and faster activation.
