This pond receives an abundance of leaves from the surrounding trees and has enough nutrients in the water to support a substantial surface growth of duckweed. This Country Pond Filter measures approximately 6ft x 6ft and was constructed from “camp lumber” during Sept. 2024.
This image was taken one month afterwards. The water temperature was still high enough to support duckweed growth.
The filter was in operation during the winter months along with the aeration diffuser to keep a hole in the ice. The following image was taken during June 2025. Rocks were added with the help of the grandkids.
The series of images show that nutrient reduction can be achieved with the inclusion of diffuser aeration and a Country Pond Filter. The green look to the water surface is the result of re-establishing a colony of planktonic algae which is very effective at competing with duckweed for nutrients.
