If you have noticed crayfish in your pond, those hard-shelled, lobster-like creatures scuttling along the bottom, you may have wondered whether they’re a help or a headache. The answer, as with most things in pond ecology, is: it depends. When their populations are in balance, crayfish are one of nature’s most effective and underappreciated tools for managing aquatic weeds and they do it without a drop of herbicide.

What Exactly Is a Crayfish?

Crayfish go by many names depending on where you grew up: crawfish, crawdads, mudbugs, or freshwater lobsters. There are more than 390 species in North America alone, making them one of the most diverse groups of freshwater invertebrates on the continent. In the northeastern United States from upstate New York and New England to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the mid-Atlantic states the species most commonly found in farm ponds, rural properties, and backyard water features are typically modest in size, rarely exceeding four inches. But their impact on pond ecology is outsized.

They are omnivorous scavengers. That means crayfish eat almost anything: aquatic insects, worms, decaying organic matter from the pond bottom, algae, and, importantly, aquatic plants. That last item is what makes them so interesting from an aquatic pond weed management standpoint.

The Crayfish as Underwater Lawnmower

Think of crayfish as a bottom-up landscaping crew working around the clock. As they forage across the pond floor, they clip, shred, and consume aquatic vegetation. Research and field observation have confirmed that crayfish can meaningfully limit the growth of several problem plants that are familiar nuisances in northeastern ponds:

Curly Leaf Pondweed (Potamogeton crispus) is an invasive plant introduced from Europe that gets an early start in cold spring water. It is often the first submerged plant to appear in March and April across New York and New England, crowding out native vegetation before it has a chance to establish. Crayfish are known to graze on curly leaf pondweed, helping to slow its early-season spread.

Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) is another invasive that forms dense underwater canopies, reducing oxygen and light for native species. It’s a persistent management challenge in ponds and lakes from the Finger Lakes to the Adirondacks to coastal Connecticut. Crayfish feeding activity can suppress milfoil growth, particularly in shallower areas of the pond where crayfish are most active.

Chara (muskgrass), a dense mat-forming algae that looks and smells like a pond problem, is also on the crayfish menu. While results vary, there is evidence that crayfish grazing can reduce chara density in areas of high activity.

The caveat here is that crayfish are not selective lawnmowers — they will graze native plants too. This is why balanced population management matters. You want enough crayfish to provide meaningful weed suppression, not so many that they strip the pond of all plant life and destabilize the ecosystem.

A Special Note and Warning for Koi Pond Owners

If you maintain a koi pond, whether a dedicated backyard water garden or a larger ornamental pond, the relationship between crayfish and your fish deserves careful attention in both directions.

On one hand, koi are not effective crayfish predators. Unlike largemouth bass or channel catfish, koi are simply not built to hunt and consume crayfish with any efficiency. So if crayfish have found their way into your koi pond, you cannot rely on the fish themselves to keep the population in check.

On the other hand, crayfish can pose a real threat to koi, particularly smaller and younger fish. Crayfish are opportunistic feeders. While they are unlikely to actively pursue a healthy adult koi, they will not pass up a slow-moving, injured, or resting fish. More commonly, crayfish will prey on koi eggs during spawning season, which can significantly undermine breeding efforts. They will also damage or consume the aquatic plants you’ve carefully cultivated as part of your koi pond’s ecosystem.

For koi pond owners, the practical guidance is straightforward: crayfish are generally unwanted guests. If you find them in your koi pond, trapping is your best first response. Because koi ponds typically lack the large predatory fish that would naturally keep crayfish populations in balance, manual removal through regular trapping becomes the primary management approach.

The Trade-Off: Water Clarity and Turbidity

Here’s where honest pond management requires some candor. Crayfish can increase water turbidity. That is, they can make your pond water look cloudy or muddy. As they move along the bottom, their legs and abdomen disturb bottom sediments, stirring fine clay and silt particles into the water column. In ponds with high crayfish populations and silty or clay-heavy bottoms, this can become a noticeable problem.

Turbidity is more than a cosmetic issue. Cloudy water limits sunlight penetration, which can reduce the productivity of beneficial aquatic plants and disrupt the natural food web. For koi pond owners especially, water clarity is prized both aesthetically and for monitoring fish health. If your pond has been running murky and you can’t trace it to algae blooms or runoff, an overabundance of crayfish may be a contributing factor.

This is one reason that keeping crayfish populations in balance through active management is such an important part of overall pond health.

Do Crayfish Damage Pond Banks?

A common concern we hear from pond owners is whether crayfish will burrow through the dam or banks and cause leaks. It’s a legitimate question. Crayfish are indeed burrowers. They dig into soft soil near the shoreline to find shelter, escape predators, and stay moist during dry periods.

The good news for most pond owners in our region: while crayfish burrows can contribute to minor bank erosion over time, they are seldom a direct cause of serious leaks in well-constructed pond banks. The burrowing behavior that causes significant structural damage is more characteristic of certain invasive crayfish species found in other parts of the world. That said, if you have a pond with an aging earthen dam or banks with any compromised structural integrity, a high crayfish population is an additional stress you don’t want. It’s worth monitoring, and worth mentioning when you schedule a consultation.

Managing Crayfish Populations Naturally

If crayfish populations get out of hand in your pond, you have two primary natural management tools — and both work well within a healthy pond ecosystem.

Trapping

Baited funnel traps are effective at removing adult crayfish on a regular basis. Traps set with chicken liver, fish scraps, or commercial bait and left overnight can catch significant numbers. Removing adults during the spring breeding season — before females release their broods — is particularly effective. Many pond owners find that regular trapping in April and May makes a meaningful difference in population levels by summer.

And yes — the crayfish you remove are completely edible. In Louisiana they’re a culinary staple. In France, freshwater crayfish are considered a luxury food item. Your local pond could be supplying tonight’s dinner.

Predator Fish

This is where good pond management dovetails elegantly with good fishing. Both Largemouth Bass and Channel Catfish are enthusiastic consumers of crayfish and can play a significant role in keeping populations in check naturally.

Largemouth bass in particular make crayfish a dietary staple, especially juveniles. A well-managed bass population is one of the most effective long-term tools for preventing crayfish overpopulation. Channel catfish, as bottom feeders, are right in the crayfish’s neighborhood and will take every opportunity.

This option is most applicable to natural ponds and farm ponds — not koi ponds, where introducing large predatory fish would obviously create a different set of problems. For koi pond owners, consistent trapping remains the most practical approach.

If your natural pond currently lacks these predators, or their population has declined, restocking may be worth discussing as part of a broader pond management plan.

The Big Picture: Crayfish in a Balanced Pond Ecosystem

The key, as always, is balance. A modest crayfish population in your pond is almost certainly doing you more good than harm. A large population left unmanaged, particularly in a pond without adequate predator fish, can cloud the water, graze beneficial plants, and stress bank stability over time.
