Algae tend to plague pond owners during the hot, sunny, calm part of the summer. Increased sunlight and rising water temperature create ideal conditions for aggressive algae growth. With a little know-how and planning now, you can enjoy a healthier pond.

For a natural way, consider barley straw. As barley straw breaks down, chemical reactions occur that result in a solution of humic acids. With enough oxygen present in the water, the humic solution is converted into hydrogen peroxide which helps to clarify the water.

Barley straw can be purchased in a variety of forms: barley straw bales, barley liquid or compressed pellets. Bales tend to be messy and unsightly. Barley straw liquid is ideal for smaller ponds and water gardens but may become diluted when added to large volume ponds. For medium to larger ponds like farm ponds or retention ponds, we recommend barley straw pellets. Barley straw pellets store easily and break down faster than bales of straw, but don’t dilute as fast as liquid extract.
